Cowhide Area Rugs - A Natural Leather Floor Covering For Vintage Style

The use of leather around the home and in clothing goes back for centuries, so is a traditional material for furnishing and decor. Animal hides, from which leather is made, have also been used for a very long time in making area rugs. For this purpose, the most common hide is that of a cow, so cowhide area rugs are fairly common and in demand.

As a natural and hard wearing material, cowhide can make a distinctive contribution to your interior design. When first thinking of cowhide, you may only imagine a brown leather, but in fact the hides today can be worked into some impressive styles and colors.

Leather is often associated with the old West and cowboy country, so can go especially well in a Western decor theme. Cowhide products can also look good in rustic decor theme with rustic furniture. Such themes, though, are not a necessity in order to buy cowhide rugs. You may just have a leather sofa, or no other leather in your decor at all, and still find a stunningly effective area rug made from cowhide.

The top left picture is a good example of how cowhide can be used in conjunction with another animal skin. The Chapparral Brazilian Cowhide black rug is actually a mixture of cowhide and ostrich skin, a combination which leads to a rare and distinctive floor covering. This rug is made, through hand stitching, in India for Capel.

The chequered rug Rawhide (second picture) and Tiles third picture) are both from the same Loredo Leather range from Capel, and are also hand stitched with a felt backing. These area rugs, though, are 100% cowhide.
