Using Plain Area Rugs For Contrast and Simplicity in Your Home Decor

Striking the right balance between plain and patterned furnishings can be one of the most important aspects of designing your home interior. When it comes to choosing carpets, rugs, curtains and upholstery fabrics, your choice between colors and patterns can make or break the room. Realistically, though, it is much easier to use plain decor, and make it effective, than to use patterns. After all, an all plain room, such as the picture above left, readily accomodates the plain neutral rag rug beneath the table. However, if a room is all patterns, especially heavy patterns, in the curtains, chairs, settees and wallpaper, adding yet another pattern on a rug could be distastrous.
In most rooms around the house, though, there is ample scope to use plain carpets and area rugs. Braided rugs, such as the light blue rug on the left, look good plain, as do Prairie rugs (top left - all pictures courtesy of CSN stores). For luxury dep pile, flokati and other plain shag rugs can work like a treat in both modern and older style homes.

The pictures represent just a tiny fraction of the plain rugs you can choose from. With such variety of material, endless range of colors and all the basic shapes you can expect, choosing your plain rug to finish your room decor in style should be both fun and easy. But, choose carefully and wisely so that that it complements, not shouts out.
