Using Wool Rugs For a Luxurious Floor Covering
The use of wool in the production of carpets and area rugs goes back many hundreds of years; in fact, oldest records are about 2500 years. Over the years,a wool carpet or wool rug has become synonymous with luxury when it came to floor coverings, large or small.
Genuine Oriental rugs, including the famous Persian rugs, have traditionally been made with natural wool and still are today.
Wool rugs and carpets are as popular today as ever, despite the competition from man made fibers such as nylon. And it is not just oriental rugs, either. Deep shag pile such as the luxurious Greek Flokati area rugs are traditionally made from wool. The top picture (all pictures courtesy of CSN stores) is of a new Hellenic Flokati rug, from a range that includes a deep pile of up to 4 inches.
People like their rugs in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There is a place in most homes for a round area rug, such as the very colorful patterned rug pictured center. However, the most common rugs are rectangular, as in the ivory-blue area rug shown left.
As a natural fuber, the use of wool in rugs and carpets is often the preferred choice of people who want to minimize the artificial content of their home, including man made fibers and chemicals used around the home. Although the use of wool in carpet weaving is an ancient tradition, it seems to have an assured future for centuries to come.
